Feel the Bern

I got into politics after my amazing government teacher, Ms. Hastings, got me to see the importance of being knowledgeable of the political scene. Knowing that I would be old enough to vote in the next presidential election, I decided to put my knowledge to good use and follow the political candidates through their journey of becoming the next President of the United States.

I’ve been following Bernie Sanders for a good while now. I’ve heard about him through social media and honestly, I did not think much of him at first. However, as time went on, I started noticing that I agreed with almost all his views and if I didn’t, his reasoning was well enough that I trusted what he had planned. Over time, I became more and more supportive of him that when my friend told me that there was a rally coming up in the local community college I used to attend, I jumped at the chance.

My friend Sabrina, her sister Lauren, Alma, and I all decided to go to the rally early because we wanted to make sure we had a good view. Coming almost 3 hours early to the event, we passed time sitting on the cold grass and catching up on life. I haven’t seen her in forever and it was so nice finally getting to catch up and finally meet her twin! It sucks that we live so far from each other. I love how no matter how long we don’t see each other, though, it was like no time passed when we finally see/talk to each other.

Finally, 7PM rolled along. Before seeing Senator Sanders, we were treated to a mariachi band! They were amazing — and the trumpet player/singer was pretty pleasing to the eye, too!

After their performance and a couple more speakers, it was finally time for the main event: Bernie Sanders! Bernie gave such an amazing speech. I was so into the whole speech, I didn’t even realize that the cold weather had crept in and I was shaking from how chilly it was. His speech was so powerful and gave me such hope in the future if he became president. Mr. Sanders was also so humble, never bragging and ensuring that the audience knew that they played an important role in the process of elections. I don’t know how long that speech was, but it felt like a minute passed.

When he was finished, he was nice enough to go 2 rounds around the audience, shaking everyone’s hands and taking pictures when asked. My whole group was lucky enough to get a picture with him and shake his hand. I was so happy we chose to go early because we were able to get some amazing shots and we got to meet a presidential candidate!

I’m so happy the presidential elections have a candidate like Mr. Sanders. He is so humble, nice, and gave me the chance to meet some amazing people in the rally. He definitely has my vote, along with the thousands of others that attended the rally and were there in thoughts and spirit.

Give them hell, Bernie!

A Trip Full of New Friends

My mom and grandma decided to take a trip to Southern California again to see my dad before he heads off onboard the ship he is in. Since I was going, we decided to stay the entire weekend and make a trip out of it! I even got to meet a very nice Englishman in the airport on the way to Long Beach, our first leg of the trip. He was so nice! He was visiting from Los Angeles and was nice enough to help me with the chemistry homework I needed to complete that same morning (yay for procrastination).

When we arrived, we were picked up by my father’s friend and ended up going to Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles for lunch! My mom and I have been wanting to try this place out for such a long time and I am so happy we finally got to! The food was amazing and we left with our bellies full to the brim and plenty of leftovers to make it through the rest of our time in Long Beach.

Since it has been so long since I last came, we decided it would be great if we took pictures! My mom and I decided to take pictures near the Ferris wheel and aquarium (and later on before dinner when we finally got to see my dad again).

After getting some rest in the hotel, my dad finally called us and told us that he was finally off work! After a quick drive, we made it to the restaurant we wanted to go to on the pier. There, I was able to meet some people who were from Arizona and was able to have some great conversations with them as our teppanyaki chef gave us a great show. Sadly, I wasn’t able to get any pictures of the teppanyaki show, but I did get some amazing videos (too bad I can’t upload them on here for some reason. Hopefully I could figure it out soon!) From skydiving, school, to even letting them try some sashimi for the first time, it was a great experience. I love meeting new people wherever I go, and it was great having memories with such nice people like them! We even got to go get some milky buns in Afters Ice Cream. It was a great time and I sincerely wish them luck in all their endeavors.

The next day, we were off to visit my family in Santa Clarita. But beforehand, we were able to stop by Santa Monica Pier for lunch. It was great getting some time to walk around the pier, eat some lunch, take pictures, and play in the waves for a little. It was refreshing not being surrounded by all the hustle and bustle of the city.

Maybe it’s the fact that they’re my cousins, but they’re the cutest little kids I’ve ever seen! It really was a handful taking care of them, though, and I got a glimpse of how life would be like for me in the future since I do want 2 children. From feeding, playing, and putting them to sleep, I was babysitter 2.0 as my mom was more experienced (obviously). On our last night, we even let Josh, the younger sibling, sleep with us and I got to experience the joys of waking up five times in the middle of the night to crying. Although I barely got sleep and was exhausted the entire time, it really made me love the two boys even more. Since they’re coming next week for my grandma’s birthday celebration, I’m counting the days until I finally see them again!

I always love visiting family in Southern California. Though I’ve gone there more times than I can imagine, I always end up finding a great adventure whenever I go. Cheers to next time!

The Dream… Literally.

My friend was lucky enough to get tickets to Le Rêve, a show in the Wynn Hotel and Casino, and was kind enough to invite me to come with! I’ve been wanting to go to a show like this since I first moved to Las Vegas, and I was stoked to finally be able to cross this off my bucket list!

As soon as I walked in, I was put into a trance with the beauty and splendor of the stage. Since non-flash photography was permitted, I was able to snap a few pictures of the stage set-up before the show. Once the show started, I thought I would be able to take more, but I was so engrossed in what was going on in front of me, I totally forgot (and with a girl that takes hundreds of pictures a day, that’s a feat in itself!).The performers were amazing, the story was easy to follow, and the set really made you feel like you were in a dream. Everything came together so fluidly, it was almost hard to believe that this wasn’t a Cirque du Soleil show! So much was going on that everywhere you turned, you would get amazed at what you were looking at.

This is a must see if you ever want to see a show in Las Vegas. It was nothing I have imagined. The name Le Rêve literally means “The Dream”, and that’s exactly what you’re put into.

Beautiful Utah

Having to drive a couple hours away to take a test at nine o’clock in the morning, I decided to make it into a family road trip and get some adventures in before going back home. Anyone knowing me knows that I can’t just do something boring. There’s always going to end up being some sort of tacky little adventure whenever I’m around.

Waking up at the crack of dawn (okay, more like six o’clock), my family packed into our van and set off to Utah. This was my first time driving my family without my dad coaching me in the passenger’s seat, so it was a little bit of a big deal. However, I grew to love driving those long hours because of the sheer amount of amazing views you see. The last time my family ventured out here, I was asleep throughout the entire car ride. So I missed out. A lot.

Anyways, fast forward to after my boring exam (which I placed in the 95th percentile nationally. What an accomplishment!), my family decided to grab some lunch in Chick-fil-A. I gotta admit, I’m a big fan! The food was really good and it tasted better than the other fast food chains I’ve tried. Maybe it’s the fact that Nevada is Chick-fil-A-less, but this place has a spot in my heart right next to In-n-Out. Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 1.47.08 PMAfter grabbing lunch and replenishing our energy, we then set off to the main event: Zion National Park! On the way there, we passed by some cute little towns that I could only imagine living in. From the road full of American flags down the side, to cute little farm filled with multiple animals, the views were just another add-on to the wonderful drive.

Since we came in the late afternoon, we were not able to hike like we planned. However, my family decided to take the scenic drive across the whole park and see what it had to offer since it was all our first time visiting. Oh, my. If I wasn’t holding the lives of eight of my family members in the hands holding the car steering wheel, I wouldn’t have taken my eyes off the beautiful landscape. It had its own type of beautiful to it, just like everything nature has to offer, that left you breathless with each turn. I was still so upset that we were not able to hike, but at least it gave me an excuse to come back and get it checked off my bucket list!

The only photo my mom was awake to capture lol! I'm keeping my hands on the steering wheel!

The only photo my mom was able to capture lol! I’m keeping my hands on the steering wheel!

Going towards the park, we noticed a cute little gift shop with a miniature little town that caught our attention in the town Virgin. When we went home, we were lucky enough to spot it again and take a look. It was too adorable! The inside was a gift shop with unique little knick-knacks offered, from buffalo jerky to Native American “artifacts”. The kid in me immediately chose to pay to go to the petting zoo. My cousin and I got to take pictures with the alpacas, llamas, and ponies that lived there and fed them with some carrots. We were also lucky enough to grab a few pictures of the fake, miniature town that caught our eye in the first place!

The other thing that caught my eye were… crickets! You read right. There were crickets and worms of all different flavors (no scorpions, sadly). My cousin and I, after much thought, ended up picking salt & vinegar crickets to try. We figured the favor would mask the taste if it ended up being repulsive. We surprisingly liked it! Since they’re FDA approved, I didn’t need to worry about the crickets having any type of pesticide or chemical in their bodies. It honestly reminded me of a small potato chip. I’m so happy I could finally check this off my bucket list! Now, for the scorpion…

Crickets, anyone?

Crickets, anyone?

Overall, this trip was a success. Although short-lived, it was enough to leave me wanting more and for a return trip definitely in the future. Utah, in the word’s of Arnold Schwarzenegger, “I’ll be back”.

Little People and Lamp Posts

As celebration for getting my new car, my parents decided to test it out by taking a road trip to LA! It was very short, but I was more than happy to go. We surprised my family members living in LA and they graciously let us stay in their house for the night we were spending there. I don’t know if it is just because it is my family, but my little cousins were the most adorable toddlers on the face of this planet! I had way too much time (and muscle gain) holding the younger boy, Joshua, while watching his older brother, Sean, play. So well-behaved, polite, and nice. I loved it!

We didn’t tour much because of the lack of time, but we were still able to see a lot of LA. Long story short, we visited the lamp posts in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Milk, and even though we were not able to hike up because of the parking, Griffith Observatory. Oh, and not to forget Porto’s! It’s unheard of my family not stocking up on these amazing pastries before heading back home. If you haven’t tried it, do it. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Weightlessness = the most surreal feeling ever

15,000 Feet (and 18 Years) Later

Because it was my 18th birthday, I wanted to do something crazy and memorable to celebrate. So, to satisfy the adrenaline junkie inside me, my dad treated me to go skydiving! Long story short, it is one of the most memorable things I’ve ever done and I don’t think I could top this off in a long time. The adrenaline from the plane door going up, seeing the views from 3 miles high, and the thrill of weightlessness as you are plummeting back to Earth was surreal. I totally recommend it to anyone who has even thought about skydiving. It’s really an experience you’ll never forget! It really made me fearless and more open to trying some of the more daring things on my bucket list (hint hint: wanna participate in Shark Week, anyone?) To share, here are some of the pictures my skydive partner, Demetri, took with his GoPro. I still get chills looking at these pictures!!

After, I got to have dinner with my family and some close family friends. It was great spending time with so many of my loved ones. This was the best way to spend the day I turned legal. Thank you to everyone who were involved, greeted me, and made this day special!

Edit: And thank you dad for my very own new car! It’s a 2016 GMC Acadia. I’m so blessed to have such wonderful parents who want to spoil me.

The Biggest Little City in the World

Today was our full day in Reno, the main reason of this road trip. At the beginning of the day, though, we were able to stop by my future university and take some pictures by the sign. I swear, I fall in love with that school even more every time I visit. I can’t wait until I finally get to be a part of such an amazing community.

My family and I basically spent the entire day apartment hunting. As boring as it sounds, I actually enjoyed it a whole lot! It allowed me to go around all of Reno and Carson City and get to know my future home before actually moving there. Not to mention, I was able to find an amazing apartment!

Getting hungry, we stopped by Doughboy’s Doughnuts and U-Swirl to grab a quick bite to eat. Maybe it’s just me, but everyone in this town seems so nice. I could already tell that it’s a lot slower than Vegas and San Francisco, where I lived, and that might cause a bit of a roadblock for me since I’m used to always being on the go. This might serve as a good thing, though, because there are enough events to keep me interested, but not enough to take a toll on my studies (I am in college, after all).

And how terrible would it have been for me if I went to Reno without taking a picture at the iconic Reno sign? It’s a must! We went twice, once during the day time, and then again after dinner.

Speaking of dinner, we had pho in an amazing restaurant near the sign. Maybe it was because it was the warm meal I’ve had that wasn’t packed up inside containers for our road trip, but it was heavenly. My cousin and I also got to drink some fresh coconut! It wasn’t as sweet as the ones I remember back in the Philippines, but it sure quenched my thirst – and cravings! It was great getting to eat some great food while being around great people: family and servers.

I can’t believe it’s going to be a month until I go to Reno to attend university. I can already tell that this will be an adventure that will teach me so many lessons and bring me through some amazing journeys with amazing people. I can’t wait to see what the future (and my new apartment decorating) has in store!

Credits to Alma for taking this amazing picture!

Nature-Loving

I have such a love-hate relationship with family road trips. I love going on adventures and getting to see the world, but I dislike the countless hours sitting on your butt all day, cramped like a can of sardines. However, with my college life starting in exactly a month, apartment hunting in Reno, my college town, was a must!

Heading there, we stopped by an adorable little gas station sporting Area 51 souvenirs. It was so refreshing to go around and see some quirky little things after about a hundred miles of nothing.

After about an hour after, we soon found ourselves in the small town of Beatty, Nevada. There, we ended up in a cute little shop that sold some unique foods, from jalapeño-stuffed olives to orange blossom honey. Being the foodies we are, my cousin and I opted to buy some buffalo and venison jerky ($12 each) and avocado honey ($8). Though more on the expensive side, the flavors were so worth it! I need to go back and buy some stuffed olives because I heard that it was delicious.

Yosemite National Park was more gorgeous than I remember! I went when I was a little girl and, 10 years later, I’m still amazed at how beautiful and wonderful Mother Nature is. No amount of editing or picture-taking can show how surreal the views are. If you’ve seen pictures, but have never gone, I highly suggest going and experiencing everything yourself. No picture on Google can amaze you more than seeing the actual sights yourself.

Though we were only there for a half day, we were able to take some amazing pictures during our time there. Here’s a glimpse of our trip in a few stills:

Living in Vegas, I honestly forgot how beautiful nature can be without seeing a bunch of dry, dead trees around. I’m so happy this was added into our trip to Reno as a detour before heading up. Seeing all this green makes me remember why I chose the University of Nevada, Reno as my university, though I’ll get into a long, emotional post about that some other time!

The Hoover Dam!

Driving Independence

Recently, I have decided to take a few summer classes in a college across town from where I live. Now, because of the amount of time it takes to commute here (about an hour on a lucky day), my parents finally trusted me enough to hand me the keys to their cars!… During school days.

Well, I have a few hours in between one of my classes where I do absolutely nothing. Taking the location of this college to my advantage, I was able to go on some amazing (and last minute) trips to some cute little places!

Yesterday, I embarked on my first trip by going to Boulder City! Boulder City is approximately a half hour from Las Vegas. I’ve heard how adorable the Home of the Hoover Dam was, so I had to check it out for myself! I gotta admit, it was more adorable in person! Driving around the main street, Nevada Way, reminded me of driving in a quaint town stuck in the 1950s.

After debating on what to do for a couple minutes, I finally found a parking spot by this cute little ice cream parlor, Grandma Daisy’s Ice Cream Shop! The parlor had an adorable 50’s vibe to it (adding to the overall vibe of the town). I bought myself a scoop of colorful vanilla ice cream, sat down in one of the cute tables outside the shop, and people watched. Apparently, Susan and Tim were going to get married, but couldn’t because Susan’s mom different approve that she was marrying her sister’s ex-boyfriend! Gasp!

Walking around by myself and taking in all the sights was such a fun experience, I decided to do it again two days later! I haven’t been to the Hoover Dam in forever, so that’s exactly where I went! I’m so lucky that it is literally less than a half hour drive from my college. It didn’t even make a dent to my gas tank! I thought it would be so much harder to take pictures with the lack of a selfie stick, but I was lucky enough to meet some very nice people to take pictures for me!

After eating my lunch with that amazing view in front of me, I decided to drive down to as much of Arizona as I could get. I actually made it halfway to Phoenix, but because of time constraints, had to turn back. However, I did have a chance to stop by the Lake Mead overlook. The view was spectacular! I have yet to go to Lake Mead, even though I have passed this lake multiple times. Hopefully that will change soon! I met a very nice couple who was visiting from Michigan. I enjoyed getting to spend time with them and talking to them about their lives in Michigan in mine in Vegas. I really hope they enjoy their stay here!

I used to be so scared of doing things myself, so this road trip was a big leap into independence that I’ve never taken before. Honestly, I’m starting to love the independence it’s given me. The thrill of being alone, jamming in the car with the stereo turned all the way up, and seeing the amazing views unfold in front of me in the road… how much better can that be? Although I love experiencing things with close friends and family, these past few days just showed me that sometimes, alone is okay, too.

#LoveWins, and It Always Will

Gay marriage is upheld by the Supreme Court today, and it would be almost wrong of me to not document this historic day. All around, I see people rejoicing, monuments decorated in the luminous colors of the rainbow, and the marriages of couples all over the nation who finally get to profess their love for each other, I am saddened to see all the hatred that has come with this decision, as well.

I look at pictures of all the people celebrating. I see all the tears, the smiles. I see pure joy. I see LOVE. I don’t see sinners. I don’t see hate. I don’t see evil. I will never understand why so much energy is put into hate, when all of that energy could be used in your own life to do some good. A man marrying a man, a woman marrying a woman… that has no bearing on me and my life. It has no bearing on you and yours. Imagine if all the negativity went away. Imagine if you just let me live my life and I let you live yours. If no one is hurting anybody, why is that so hard?

I know many of you disagree with me. I’ve seen several posts lately that have made that clear. But, I for one am glad that my children, my grandchildren, will read in history books about this day. And that they will wonder why in the world it ever used to be any other way. We are progressing, we are evolving. And I fear that those so stuck in their fear and hate are the ones who will get left behind…

But the beauty of being human, of having a mind of your own, is that you’re also able to change it. :)
